01 / Lo Stato del Design 2027

Designing
for Impact

Demonstrating the value of design in the public sector.

The second edition of Lo Stato del Design showcases projects where design has delivered tangible, measurable improvements to public services.

Designing for impact means defining the change we want to achieve from the outset, measuring it and making it visible.

Turning results into evidence to inform decisions, set priorities and shape future projects.

02 / Our purpose

Making change visible

People

Measuring whether services reduce effort, delays, errors and barriers, and make it easier for people to get what they need.

Services

Defining the intended outcomes from the outset, then using data and evidence to assess whether design decisions have improved the service.

Businesses

Bringing expertise, methods and evaluation skills to public sector projects, and demonstrating how design work translates into outcomes beyond the outputs delivered.

Institutions

Using evidence of impact to inform decisions, investment and priorities, and raise expectations for the quality of future projects.

03 / Who it’s for

For everyone who puts impact at the heart of their work

Lo Stato del Design is for everyone involved in designing, delivering, researching and leading public services.

Bringing together different perspectives on how design can deliver tangible, measurable results and demonstrate its value.

1

Businesses and innovation partners

Companies, design studios and consultancies working with public sector organisations on service design, digital transformation and innovation.

2

Design professionals

Designers, researchers, content designers, service designers and anyone shaping experiences, services, content, processes and interactions around people’s needs. We see design as a practice that spans disciplines and roles, wherever people shape the way a public service is experienced.

3

Universities and research

Academics, researchers, students and research centres exploring design, public services, innovation and impact measurement.

4

Public sector organisations

Leaders, public servants and teams working across service delivery, digital, innovation, communications and organisational change.

04 / The founder

Giacomo Grassi

“Design as a driver of strategic change in the public sector.”

Giacomo
Grassi

Director of User Experience & Digital Process

INPS

Giacomo Grassi is Director of User Experience & Digital Process at INPS, Italy’s national social security institute, where he leads the transformation of digital experiences and processes through design. For over 15 years, he has worked at the intersection of design, technology and organisational change, using design strategically to navigate complexity and improve services.

At INPS, he conceived and led the development of Sirio, the institute’s design system, helping to embed a shared design culture across a complex organisation and create a consistent user experience across hundreds of digital services.

He is the founder and curator of Lo Stato del Design, a forum for exploring how design can transform organisations and public services.
